About Ed Bebb

I kept it small because the fence only knows who built it.

I started The Real Wire Fencing in 2006 after years helping on hill farms around the Long Mynd and learning from older fencers who cared about a straight strain. I still price the work myself, order the wire myself and spend most days on the tools.

Since 2006

A small trade, built one line at a time.

2006

First post knocker

Old enough to have its moods, good enough to start taking on proper farm work.

2011

First estate contract

Longer runs, more gates and the useful lesson that tidy planning saves days later.

2015

Heavier strainers

A deliberate switch after seeing too many light end posts give up before the wire did.

2019

Cattle grid work added

Grid installs came in because the gateway, fence and groundworks all need to agree.

Now

Two-person crew

Still small. Big enough to keep moving, small enough that Ed knows what has been promised.

First full week of January is kept for our own fences and a quiet look at the ground before the year starts properly.

How We Work

Good lines, honest timings, no surprise extras.

Tidy Lines

A fence should follow the field without looking drunk. Corners and gateways are set out before the easy middle is touched.

Plain Lead Times

Usual lead time is 3 to 5 weeks in the busy March to October spell and 2 to 3 weeks in quieter winter weeks.

Safe Evenings

Gates are tied safe at the end of the day. Stock, walkers and contractors should not inherit a half-made puzzle.

No Surprise Extras

If rock, buried wire or access changes the job, Ed talks it through before the bill grows legs.

Tools And Suppliers

Working kit, not showroom kit.

The job is built with a post knocker, auger, wire strainers, staple guns where they make sense and hand tools where machines would make a mess. Timber usually comes through local merchants. Galvanised gates are UK-made where possible, because a farm gate has to live outside long after the receipt has faded.

The Work Turned Down

No decorative domestic panel fencing, closeboard garden runs, patio screens, chain-link sports fencing, security palisade, emergency night storm call-outs unless you are already on the books or unsafe highway verge work without agreed traffic management. We also do not take on tree surgery, hedge laying, landscaping or drainage work unless it is directly needed for a fence line or cattle grid.

Service Area

Shrewsbury in the middle, field roads all around.

Travel is included within 25 miles of Shrewsbury. Jobs 25 to 45 miles away carry a small mileage allowance, and further travel is considered for cattle grids or estate-scale runs.
